Splashbacks
As kitchen design moves into the future, our perceptions of ‘modern’ looks and style are changing. Increasingly, form meets function within kitchen design, a feat which is apparent within the much changed role and appearance of kitchen splashbacks. A splashback usually covers the area directly behind the hob, or else the entire length of wall within this area. Its purpose is to protect walls from splashes and spills during cooking. Whilst their presence was once purely functional, splashbacks can now prove largely influential over a finished kitchen’s look, and frequently make quite the statement feature! And far from its traditional tiled origins, the splashback has evolved to the extent they are widely available in diverse colours, styles and materials; multiple options to suit all budgets and tastes.

Splashback Versus Upstands
Like splashbacks, upstands are available in an array of materials and line the worktop where the worktop and walls meet…except they are usually only 100mm high. Upstands create an attractive border for the walls, protecting them from damage, and are well suited for both modern and traditional kitchen styles.
A splashback is typically full height, filling the gap between the work surface and the bottom of the wall units. These can be different materials, such as shown here in a combination of stone and glass.

Glass Splashback Finishes
Glass splashbacks can be sand-blasted prior to painting, which results in a matt appearance. This is a great choice for design continuity with Matt Kitchen designs.
Ligneous Kitchens can also supply a range of toughened mirror glass. There are numerous options- silvered, smoked, bronzed, antiqued and distempered. You can even have any print, design or photograph digitally transferred to a print the same size as the splashback and stuck to clear or effect glass for a really bold result!
In fact we can even supply broken glass (sandwiched between two intact panels) which can look fantastic and is sure to draw the attention of any visitors.

Stone Splashbacks
Stone splashbacks can match the material and style of the worktop, or they can run in counterpoint to it. Essentially any natural or man-made stone can be used but it is usually the case that a thinner cut is used to aid fitting and bring down cost. However, with this in mind, the full range of stones from a quartz or marble splashback through to something more exotic like a back-lit onyx or travertine can be used.
The splashback is often an opportunity to give an aesthetic uplift to the design by introducing the slash of material right through the heart of the kitchen, an opportunity to be really bold! A stone splashback can bring something really rich to the kitchen and we have access to a huge range that we can show you samples of, as well as take you to see the slabs in the yard up close and personal!

Other Splashback Materials
Although one of the most common splashback materials is glass, alongside stone, kitchen splashbacks are also available in a wide range of materials including Corian, resin, tiles, and metals.
When selecting a splashback material your key considerations are likely to be the aesthetics (both in terms of colour and finish) the maintenance and ease of cleaning, the price, and any technical requirements, such as maximum length without a join.
